If you’re looking for a challenge and breathtaking views, a hike up the Ben Lomond summit in Queenstown, New Zealand is an absolute must-do. This autumn, I took on the challenge of hiking solo and it was an experience I will never forget.
The Ben Lomond Summit stands at an impressive height of 1,748 meters and is conveniently accessible from Queenstown’s city centre. While it is possible to complete the hike in a single day, it is important to have a reasonable level of fitness and prior hiking experience. The starting point for the hike is the trailhead located at the top of the Skyline Gondola, where the Ben Lomond Track begins. However, for avid hikers or budget-conscious travellers, an alternative option is available via the Tiki Trail. Situated near the base of the Skyline Queenstown Gondola, the Tiki Trail trailhead can be reached from Brecon Street, a distance away from the town centre.
The ascent to the peak was arduous and demanding, yet the scenery throughout the journey was breathtaking. The trail was adorned with vibrant red mushrooms, and with a stroke of luck, one might catch a glimpse or hear wild goats.
On my way to the summit, I met with people from all over the world. As we climbed higher and higher, we were able to take in the beautiful scenery of Queenstown and its surrounding mountains. The air was crisp and fresh, and the smell of nature was invigorating.
Finally, after 3 hours of hiking, I reached the summit. The view from the top was incredible. The summit offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it one of the best viewpoints in Queenstown. We could see all the way to the Remarkables mountain range and the shimmering Lake Wakatipu below. It was an unforgettable moment that made all the effort and sweat worth it. This was my first time to hike 1,748-meter peak. Little accomplishments mark the start of greater ambitions, and there is never a wrong time to begin.
As we rested at the summit, we took in the view and reflected on our achievement. The sense of accomplishment was amazing, and it was such a great feeling to share the experience with other hikers. We took photos to remember the moment and enjoyed a picnic lunch before heading back down the mountain.
Overall, reaching the summit of Ben Lomond was an experience of a lifetime. It’s a challenging hike, but the views and sense of accomplishment make it all worth it. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Queenstown who wants to push themselves and experience the beauty of New Zealand’s mountains.
